DISCUSSION November 17th - #2

 Global Modules / CC:

Social Networking as part of class project (for grade) to discuss topics on a world-wide basis:  Moderated threaded forum (article in CC Viewpoint magazine - Student perspective of project) that is equal to all and easier than a Wiki (John Cohn) as it organizes thoughts into threads (as opposed to Wikis that are free form and require the user to start up pages, etc.)

Wikis that fail are those that are organized by one person - successes are those where the enduser creates the process and format.

CC Global starts with seed question from teacher and then students take the conversation from there.

WikiPedia has behind the scene discussion of editing and additions AND the ability to lock an article when the topic is so topical.

Games for engaged media & games for learning:

Darfur is Dying:  Game that shows the struggles in living (dying) in Darfur

Flow:  Simple game to engage you - Eat things, get bigger, evolve

Phase 6:  How to protect yoursel from the Bird Flu - done in four days at student conference for project

FaceBook: Social networking used by college students (popular because of authenticity - real names used) - Groupings very viral and good topics spread quickly - FaceBook features of note include History & good search engine (check out groups before creating them) - Uses standard interface so there is consistency throughout the site - Sharable media options on each profile - Uses a wall to collect people's comments - Also have threading capability - Note capability can turn into a blog -
