Concluding Discussion Thread
Facebook interactions: What could you do to create a compelling experience to come back - A game to show your carbon / pollution footprint and create a way to track that activity so that improvement (or otherwise) could be noted - Done by classroom / family / community?
Database of things people should know - this is what you do that affects the lake and this is what you can change - Points on Google Earth that show this is where E.Coli is, this is where BGA is.
Podcasting / YouTube - could you create a geo-mashup of watershed for people to send in photos of best/worse situations - Share videos through MySpace and other resources
More of an Internet connection to schools' enviro-sci classes - use video / texting to personalize their response - classes determine their impact and then make promises to change behavior and track that on the Web
To help change the public perception by reaching more of the young adults through their media and inspire them to make changes based on their direct impact in creating and pushing pollutants into the Lake
Connection between cellphones and Yahoo site - multiple resources will accept uploaded videos (WCAX, etc.) dependent upon the topic
Blogging - Being compelling enough - What is the audience? What do they want/need to hear
Connection to local youth groups / places (242 Main) to give this inspired, principaled group the information to make changes in their lives and their parents/families
Low power radio station for Voices (WOMM - Big Heavy World - public access radio) or Lake concerns
Video podcasting - How to display and share (YouTube - ECHO website)
GeoCaching - an older audience that is out, looking, observing, recording and connected to technology - School use? More people - Flash Mobs / Burning Man - Could there be a such an event around a lake issue
SociaLight - GeoTracking tag places - puts signal on phones that pass by so that you can see what others tagged - Using a mashup to share where & what - Tag the world with sticky notes
FROM GROUP:
Is there a website that could have elements of facebook, myspace, geomashup; need to look at different tools as channels. Once audience and message is determined, then use the "right" channels.
Step 1) Who's the audience?
Step 2) What do you want to tell them?
Step 3) Why should they listen & then act?
Mashup to collect datapoints, video, text, photos, overlaid on a map of the Watershed - create a way for people to enter their address and then see where in the watershed they live and where their runoff goes once it leaves your property.
Compelling - Find info, find support for the things we know, find ways to look at things in a different manner
Really cool does not mean they could find it
Create curriculum to give to schools that involve the watershed and stewardship to make it compelling to classroom teachers
Why return to a site - Something new - One trip to GoogleEarth to see your house (doesn't change) - many trips to YouTube (changes every day)
Watershed potluck - an event to meet others in the same watershed (as with community, neighborhood, etc. potlucks)
Community links based on watershed - One person finds another through the web to talk about the watershed and then that leads to another person, etc. to build the community
What is compelling about ECHO to keep people coming back (besides transitional exhibit area)?
To reach a larger audience, what two or three events do we need to offer in a year, through the web and otherwise?
How to get a higher amount of Internet traffic so that 2% can create content for the other 98% to draw upon
Contest: Watershed based - funniest water video, most beautiful, etc. - air the winner on TV, others on website
Place-based organizations - Not to figure out which is more important, but to set the agenda factor
Co-produce the weather with WCAX
Ways to supply information junkies with watershed real-time
Watershed participation - List of things to change in their household to improve the watershed / mashup marks those that have completed checklist / encourages people to check with neighbors to get their marks / scorecard on how their changes are helping the lake
Build communities (FaceBook) through fun challenges and positive efforts
